Frequently asked questions

Which healthcare professionals can diagnose APD?

Qualified AUDIOLOGISTS. Only qualified audiologists (APD specialists) must perform the assessment, interpret the results and offer formal deficit-specific intervention. This information is clearly stated in at least 7 APD guidelines around the world - British Society of Audiology (2018), American Academy of Audiology (2010), New Zealand APD Guidelines (2014), Ireland APD Research Group Guidelines (2008), Canadian Interorganizational Steering Group for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (2012), Australian Position Statement on APD / National Acoustic Laboratories (2015), Dutch Position Statement for APD (2017).

Does the AP assessment include the hearing test?

No. You must have had a hearing assessment before the APD assessment. This can be booked via NHS or private Audiology clinics. We also offer it in our clinic. Just let us know when you book the Auditory Processing Assessment.

I've had an AP assessment in another clinic. Can I do the APD Intervention in your clinic?

Yes, it is possible. However, the AP assessment must be recent. Contact us to discuss what to do.

How much is the AP assessment and APD Intervention?

Please contact us using the “Contact" link on the main page. Concessionary rates are offered in some exceptional circumstances.

My son is six years old. Could you assess him?

Unfortunately, no.  The assessment is performed only from 7 years old.

I have an age-related hearing loss and wear hearing aids. However, I still need help understanding what people say, especially in background noise. How could you help me?

The first step is to check if your problem is related to the hearing aid itself. Please contact us to discuss what to do.

Do you do the “APD screening”?

No, we don't do the “APD screening”. We do a preliminary assessment to ensure that it's possible to carry out the AP assessment and to check whether this is the right and best option for your concern. This is assessed in the first appointment (see THE APD CLINIC – Auditory Processing Assessment).

English is my second language. Can I still have the AP assessment in your clinic?

Yes, contact us to discuss the options available in this specific case.

Do I need a referral to have the AP assessment or intervention?

No, referrals are not mandatory. However, if another healthcare professional recommends the assessment, we usually request a brief letter explaining the main concerns.
